Overview

In this performance assessment, students will use the context of a playground design to apply their knowledge and skills related to geometric thinking to solve problems. Specifically, students will utilize the Pythagorean Theorem to determine measures for different playground components.

Students will use their understanding of each of these competencies to solve these problems and explain their methodology/process for finding their solutions. This assessment can be used any time during the school year, but ideally it should be used after instruction on the following competencies in grade 8:

  • Students can apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

This assessment can also be used as a review in 9th grade math classes.

Students can create the final presentation in any appropriate way, including, but not limited to, PowerPoint or Google Slides (or another slideshow tool), Microsoft Word or Google Docs, paper and colored pens/pencils/ markers. Final student work should be saved as an Acrobat PDF for uploading to the virtual scoring software.

Big Ideas & Competencies

Big Ideas Competencies

D. Geometric Reasoning

Students can analyze, evaluate and generate explanations about their world by exploring the properties and relationships of points, lines, shapes, space, and the positions of figures.

Distance Between Two Points 1

Students can find the horizontal and vertical distances between two points on a graph.

NOTE ABOUT ASSESSMENT RUBRICS

Below are analytic teacher rubrics. The column on the left shows the dimension that is being measured in the student’s performance. The levels across the top row indicate the performance level in the dimensions. Occasionally all dimensions and performance levels are exemplified by multiple students in a single recording.
