Overview

In this performance assessment, students will solve unit rate problems using ratios of fractions including lengths, areas, and other quantities measured in like or different units.

Specifically, students will be asked to solve a recipe issue. The first problem will ask students to find the unit rate of flour to sugar in the recipe where the original recipe has fractional amounts of flour and sugar. The second problem will have students work through finding the amount of flour needed given the amount of sugar. The third problem will ask them to figure out the ratio of the combined weight of the flour and sugar to the total weight of the cake.

Students can show their work in the workspace provided in the student booklet. Printed booklets are suggested to evaluate student work. If the assessment task is done digitally, students should be familiar with showing their mathematical processes digitally.  
This assessment would best be used after instruction of unit rates using fractions.
