Overview

In this performance assessment, students will construct triangles using only a pencil, ruler and protractor (or angle ruler), if possible, and decide if there are multiple triangles that can be constructed. This assessment is best used once students have had instruction and practice with constructing triangles using properties of triangles.

Big Ideas Competencies

D. Geometric Reasoning

Students can collect and organize data to interpret, model, and investigate issues connected to their communities, lived experiences, and cultural identities.

Classifying 2-D Shapes 1

Students can construct (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) triangles from three measures of angles or sides, and identify when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle.

NOTE ABOUT ASSESSMENT RUBRICS

Below are analytic teacher rubrics. The column on the left shows the dimension that is being measured in the student’s performance. The levels across the top row indicate the performance level in the dimensions. Occasionally all dimensions and performance levels are exemplified by multiple students in a single recording.

Concepts and Procedures (Play It)

  • I can solve part of the problem, but I am confused in some places and have construction mistakes.
  • I can solve the problem using strategies that make sense with few construction mistakes.
  • I can solve the problem efficiently and accurately without any construction mistakes.

Reasoning and Explaining (Make It)

  • I can provide some facts for triangles that can be made or believable facts for ones that are fake.
