In this performance assessment, students will use the context of paths walked in a park to apply their knowledge and skills related to geometric thinking to solve problems. Specifically, students will utilize the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the distances walked in a park using coordinate points.
Students will use their understanding of each of these competencies to solve these problems and explain their methodology/process for finding their solutions. This assessment can be used any time during the school year, but ideally it should be used after instruction on the following competencies in grade 8:
This assessment can also be used as a review in 9th grade math classes.
Students can create the final solutions in any appropriate way, but most likely in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, paper and colored pens/pencils/ markers. Final student work should be saved as an Acrobat PDF for uploading to the virtual scoring software.
