In this performance assessment, students will research the cost of a scooter or a bike. They will calculate the percentage of the cost they already have in their savings as well as how much their family is willing to pay if they cover 40% of the cost. They will then write a sales pitch that will convince their family to buy this item.
This assessment can be used at any time in grade 7 or 8 as a review OR after students have had instruction on solving percent problems in 6th grade.

| Big Ideas | Competencies |
|---|---|
B. Operations and Algebraic ThinkingStudents can use mathematics to analyze and evaluate historical, political, economic, scientific, and social problems and make conjectures about possible solutions. |
Ratios and Proportional Relationships 2Students can solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. |
Below are analytic teacher rubrics. The column on the left shows the dimension that is being measured in the student’s performance. The levels across the top row indicate the performance level in the dimensions. Occasionally all dimensions and performance levels are exemplified by multiple students in a single recording.
