Overview

In this performance assessment students will use their knowledge of multi-digit multiplication to devise a reasonable reward system for a school reading contest. Specifically, students will demonstrate their ability to multiply a four-digit number by a two-digit number. Students will create a proposed rewards program for the student to be able to win prizes. This assessment might best be used after students have demonstrated they can multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Big Ideas & Competencies

Big Ideas Competencies

A. Understanding and Applying Number Systems

Students understand that numbers hold value and can choose the appropriate representations and algorithms to reason quantitatively, abstractly, and efficiently.

Fluently Multiply 1

Students can fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

NOTE ABOUT ASSESSMENT RUBRICS

Below are analytic teacher rubrics. The column on the left shows the dimension that is being measured in the student’s performance. The levels across the top row indicate the performance level in the dimensions. Occasionally all dimensions and performance levels are exemplified by multiple students in a single recording.

Concepts and Procedures

  • I can multiply whole digit numbers using a strategy other than the standard algorithm or I can use the standard algorithm but process mistakes are evident.
  • I can multiply whole digit numbers using the standard algorithm and there are a couple of computation (not process) errors.
  • I can multiply whole digit numbers using the standard algorithm without errors.

Reasoning and Explaining

  • I made a persuasive argument that didn’t have any mathematical reasoning.
  • I made a persuasive argument that had one mathematically-related reason.
  • My persuasive argument had more than one mathematically-related reason.
